We were excited to deliver our brand new Kubernetes tutorial at Durham HPC Days 2026. Titled Pocket-Sized Kubernetes: Building and Deploying with Raspberry Pi Clusters, the tutorial was split into two parts. The first saw participants build their own 4-node clusters using Rancher's lightweight K3s distribution on Raspberry Pi hardware. The second was exercise-based, allowing participants to learn Kubernetes deployments and cluster management via a number of hands-on demos.
Some teething connectivity issues aside (yes, it is possible to saturate a £20 TP-Link router!), the tutorial was a success, with great engagement and feedback from attendees that we will carry onwards—along with our newfound Pi hardware—to future iterations of the tutorial. Thanks to everyone who took part and offered interesting questions and suggestions.
All resources for the tutorial are available on GitHub, including instructions for following along at home with your own hardware. We welcome anyone who wants to get involved with the SIG to get in touch with Lewis or Piper, and sign up to our mailing list.
Finally, thanks to CAKE for supporting our travel and delivery of the workshop, and to the Durham HPC Days organisers for accommodating our rather novel tutorial pitch!
